Hulu improves its player, commits to Flash | Web Crawler – CNET News

“We continue to monitor developments on HTML5, but as of now it doesn’t yet meet all of our customers’ needs,” Wei said. “Our player doesn’t just simply stream video, it must also secure the content, handle reporting for our advertisers, render the video using a high performance codec to ensure premium visual quality, communicate back with the server to determine how long to buffer and what bitrate to stream, and dozens of other things that aren’t necessarily visible to the end user. Not all video sites have these needs, but for our business these are all important and often contractual requirements.”
The news does put a chill on the rumor that the company was working on a version of the site for devices that can run HTML5 video but not Adobe’s Flash.

School of One: The Pandora of Learning – GOOD Education – GOOD

The School of One, which began as a pilot program last summer, offers essentially a menu of options for learning: Students can choose from a computer program that adapts to their abilities, choosing a “playlist” of appropriate lessons to help them build on previously learned concepts. Alternatively, they can opt for taking instruction in small groups from a live instructor. And, if neither of those options suit their learning styles, kids can also work with a virtual math tutor

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off Being Played Out Live On Twitter And Foursquare. Awesome.

An account, @ferris_bueller_, started tweeting yesterday afternoon, noting, “Ugh… school’s really getting me down. less than an hour to go.” Bueller apparently went home and was quiet on Twitter until about 7 hours ago when he tweeted, “Really don’t feel like going to school today… Think I have a plan” If you’ve seen the movie, you know what happens from here. If not, watch it now and starting following the account, the day is still ongoing — they’re at the baseball game right now.

ongoing by Tim Bray · HTML5 and the Web

Let’s Do Scenarios · What’s the best thing that could happen? Some widely-interoperable dialect of HTML5 becomes broadly usable quicker than expected, and we get decent tooling around it quicker than expected, and the nature of the devices evolves slowly enough so as not to outpace heavyweight browser technology. In this world, software user experience is on average better and development cost is on average lower. ¶

The worst thing that can happen? HTML5 is holed below the waterline by some combination of interpersonal toxicity and corporate land-grabs and intellectual-property litigation; doesn’t become a really appealing application platform for a few more years.

Intridea Blog: SMS Fu – Quickly & Easily Send Text Messages

Having had to develop apps that relied on the ability to send text messages to members, I thought that it would be a good idea to turn some of that functionality into a plugin that would be easy to use. SMS Fu gives you the ability to be able to send text messages from your Rails app in less than five minutes. There’s no third-party gateway needed, as the phone number is converted into an e-mail address, which makes it deliverable to any phone.
