JPoz – Apple Push Notification Service Gem

Over the last couple of months I’ve been playing around with Apple’s new Apple Push Notification Service (APNS). I’ve written up a little gem to incapsulate the main functionality of APNS. I named it APNS for obvious reasons and put up the code on github.

How-To: Give Your Old iPhone New Life With Prepaid Data and Minutes

AT&T offers a contract-free, pay-as-you-go plan called the GoPhone, which works much like a calling card where you pay in advance for phone minutes as well as data. Currently you can buy a $100 calling card and the credit is good for a year. Other small denominations are available with shorter expiration dates.

iPhone Development Costs – OS X Daily

More Complex or Recognized Brand App: $50,000-$150,000 – it was reported that the official Barack Obama app was developed in 22 days at a rate of $100-$150/hour, with roughly 500-1000 hours put into the app. The Obama app isn’t simple but it isn’t as complex as some of the other apps out there, so I imagine some of the costs here are scaled up based purely on the recognizable brand associated with the app itself.

The bottom line; if you’re looking to develop either a very complicated app, or you’re a large recognized entity and looking to put out an iPhone app, it’s going to cost you some serious cash.

How To: Use your iPhone data plan with iPad

Here are the APN settings that are required:
APN name: wap.cingular
username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
password: CINGULAR1
After changing the APN settings and enabling cellular data I again used Safari to test out my internet connection. It stuttered at first and I thought I had failed, but soon the connection picked up and I was browsing the web over 3G. It was very exciting to use my iPad over 3G for the first time all without having to pay for an additional data plan.

iPhone Design Causes AT&T Network Problems

But here’s the fascinating point: the signaling issues aren’t just AT&T’s fault. In a quest to extend battery life on the iPhone, Apple did something ‘non-standard’ which compounds the issues – the iPhone constantly drops connections, going in to an idle state. Keepalives within the apps then reestablish a new connection after only a few seconds. Network equipment makers never anticipated this. Think of it as hanging up during a phone call when the line is silent, and then redialing to respond.

The Flash Blog » Apple Slaps Developers In The Face

Now let me put aside my role as an official representative of Adobe for a moment as I would look to make it clear what is going through my mind at the moment. Go screw yourself Apple.
