America's K-12 Education Strategy – Forbes.com

Vedoe believes that Apex can build a $100 million company serving the at-risk population. “There are over 1 million students who drop out of high school every year. Keeping them is a very substantial opportunity. We estimate there are anywhere from 6 million to 10 million secondary students who are not performing at a proficient level. Approximately 70% of eighth graders are below proficiency in both reading and math. When you get to 12th grade, the data is not that different. We think the target market for the programs we offer is quite significant; there are approximately 15 million secondary students.” (More on Apex Learning in my interview with Vedoe here.)

10.5M Pre-K-12 students to take online courses by 2014, research firm predicts | Clayton Christensen

A new report by research firm Ambient Insight says that by 2014, 10.5 million PreK-12 students will attend classes online. As many will recall, in the book Disrupting Class, we predicted that by 2019 50 percent of all high school courses will be online—and by 2014 we had predicted 25 percent. Guess we’re not the only ones making a bold prediction here anymore.

According to THE Journal, Ambient Insight’s Chief Research Officer says that about 450,000 K-12 students attend virtual school full time and another 1.75 million take some of their classes online. If true, those numbers—particularly the first—represent higher estimates than I had been seeing.

“While many of our nation’s K-12 schools clearly recognize the advantages of online learning and instruction in teacher professional development, there remains a lag in utilizing this technology for student achievement,” said Julie Evans, CEO of Project Tomorrow. “Educators must embrace these emerging technologies to enhance student learning and fully prepare today’s students for future success.”
