Hulu improves its player, commits to Flash | Web Crawler – CNET News

“We continue to monitor developments on HTML5, but as of now it doesn’t yet meet all of our customers’ needs,” Wei said. “Our player doesn’t just simply stream video, it must also secure the content, handle reporting for our advertisers, render the video using a high performance codec to ensure premium visual quality, communicate back with the server to determine how long to buffer and what bitrate to stream, and dozens of other things that aren’t necessarily visible to the end user. Not all video sites have these needs, but for our business these are all important and often contractual requirements.”
The news does put a chill on the rumor that the company was working on a version of the site for devices that can run HTML5 video but not Adobe’s Flash.

What's New in GWT 2.0? – Google Web Toolkit

One of the biggest changes you will notice with GWT 2.0 is development mode, which replaces what used to be called “hosted mode”. Prior to 2.0, “hosted mode” provided a special-purpose “hosted browser” to debug your GWT code. As of GWT 2.0, the web application being debugged is viewed within a regular browser with the support of the Google Web Toolkit Developer Plugin, which is available for most popular browsers. In other words, you can now develop and debug code as it runs in Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Chrome.

Microsoft's Silverlight 4 – Flash developers need not apply

Flash is hard to shift, with greater penetration in web browsers, much better device support, and a strong industry alliance in the form of its Open Screen Project. Silverlight 4 adds DRM for H.264 content, along with offline DRM, but success here is more about establishing partnerships and getting the runtime deployed than it is about adding features.

Flex's coopetition: HTML5 | InsideRIA

It won’t be ready for prime time this year, and probably not next year, but the HTML5 specification is firming up and current implementations suggest a that HTML5 will be a strong platform for RIAs. People familiar with other versions of HTML might assume that Flex would have a few advantages over HTML5: AIR (no browser required) and data services (distributed computing.) The neologism ‘ coopetition’ might be an apt term for the relationship between HTML5 and Flex.

Flex 3 versus Silverlight 3 in Enterprise development.

Ultimately for me the choice comes down to what you’re trying to achieve. At this stage if looks are your only concern, then Flex probably has an edge. However if you’re looking to build complex business functionality and are concerned with value for money then I think Silverlight offers a better value proposition. This is primarily due to the resultant code base that you would have with a Silverlight project; simpler, higher level, more maintainable and robust code. As complexity increases, so does the importance of having a well structured codebase. Without this the number of bugs and regressions can grow exponentially, in turn driving up development cost.

I’m biased, I’ve developed with C# for years and I’ve enjoyed doing so.
