Analysis: Which URL Shortening Service Should You Use?
Good article even though he missed http://shw.me . URL shortening services are experiencing a renaissance in the age of Twitter. delicious founder on url shorteners
The problem is that shortening services add another layer of indirection to an already creaky system. A regular hyperlink implicates a browser, its DNS resolver, the publisher’s DNS server, and the publisher’s website. With a shortening service, you’re adding something that acts like a third DNS resolver, except one that is assembled out of unvetted PHP and MySQL, without the benevolent oversight of luminaries like Dan Kaminsky and St. Postel. kl.am is a search engine friendly URL shortener, created by Raven Internet Marketing Tools. Not only is kl.am incredibly short, it’s also the first URL shortener to support Campaign Variables. Campaign Variables allow you to tag links with campaign data that can be tracked by popular stats services, like Google Analytics.
kl.am offers bookmarklets that allow the use of the service right from your browser, without the need to visit the site, and has a full API which allows access to all of the features of kl.am, including referral and click-through statistics. (SingleFunction.com)
