API Client
One of the most important architectural changes is that Twitter.com is now a client of our own API. It fetches data from the same endpoints that the mobile site, our apps for iPhone, iPad, Android, and every third-party application use. This shift allowed us to allocate more resources to the API team, generating over 40 patches. In the initial page load and every call from the client, all data is now fetched from a highly optimized JSON fragment cache.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off Being Played Out Live On Twitter And Foursquare. Awesome.
An account, @ferris_bueller_, started tweeting yesterday afternoon, noting, “Ugh… school’s really getting me down. less than an hour to go.” Bueller apparently went home and was quiet on Twitter until about 7 hours ago when he tweeted, “Really don’t feel like going to school today… Think I have a plan” If you’ve seen the movie, you know what happens from here. If not, watch it now and starting following the account, the day is still ongoing — they’re at the baseball game right now.

Amazon.com: Merlin D. Mann "merli…'s review of Tweet Nothings (Mini Book) (Charming Petite)
My stolen “tweets” are hardly “nothing”, April 10, 2010
By Merlin D. Mann “merlinmann”
This review is from: Tweet Nothings (Mini Book) (Charming Petite) (Hardcover)
[Note: This book's unauthorized commercial use of my Twitter posts is the basis for this review]
As others reviewers have mentioned, this book is primarily a compendium of Twitter posts that were written by people who are not the author. I am one of those people.
While I’m thrilled that *anyone* enjoys *any* of the 4,000 items I’ve written and posted for the entertainment of the 67,000 people who are deranged enough to follow me on Twitter, I’m disappointed that the author, editor, and publisher of this title never bothered to seek any kind of permission before publishing and selling my stuff. And, from what I can gather, I’m neither the only person who got nicked, nor the only person who absolutely does not consider it some big-hearted honor.

twttr sketch on Flickr – Photo Sharing!
One night in July of that year I had an idea to make a more “live” LiveJournal. Real-time, up-to-date, from the road. Akin to updating your AIM status from wherever you are, and sharing it. For the next 5 years, I thought about this concept and tried to silently introduce it into my various projects. It slipped into my dispatch work. It slipped into my networks of medical devices. It slipped into an idea for a frictionless service market. It was everywhere I looked: a wonderful abstraction which was easy to implement and understand.
The 6th year; the idea has finally solidified (thanks to the massively creative environment my employer Odeo provides) and taken a novel form. We’re calling it twttr (though this original rendering calls it stat.us; I love the word.ed domains, e.g. gu.st). It’s evolved a lot in the past few months. From an excited discussion and persuasion on the South Park playground to a recently approved application for a SMS shortcode.
