The middle-class is fairly recent concept from the last 50 years and came about generally from jobs in the manufacturing industries. But these days America as a country makes very few ‘hard products’ like toys or cars. In fact we run a trade deficit and consume more of these things from other countries than we export of anything else. If you evolve this procession to its natural conclusion there will be no goods produced in the United States just an upper class of Business and Knowledge Workers sitting at computers all day and a lower class of people servicing that upper class (haircuts, lunch, etc).
